Drug-related crime and its prosecution in the Czech Republic, with an outlook on the expected impacts of legislative changes
Abstract:
The study describes and analyzes the status and trends of recorded primary drug-related crime in the Czech Republic for the period 2017–2025. It draws on official crime statistics reported by the Police Presidium of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Justice of the Czech Republic. It examines police statistics on recorded crime, data from public prosecutors’ offices on individuals subject to preliminary criminal proceedings, and court statistics on convicted individuals and imposed sanctions. These indicators are tracked for the entire category of primary drug-related crime, as well as at the level of individual offenses falling within that category. The study’s general conclusion is that the key indicators of drug-related crime under review did not experience any significant fluctuations, particularly after 2020; however, this finding must be interpreted in light of the presumed high level of underreporting associated with this type of criminal activity. A separate section of the study provides information on significant changes to drug legislation over the past two years, which have had a marked impact on criminal law provisions governing drug-related crime; in the future, these changes are expected to be reflected in official statistics on drug-related crime and its prosecution.
