Illegal migration to the Czech Republic in 2023
Abstract:
The article deals with a frequent and widely discussed phenomenon in the public and political spheres: illegal migration. The Czech public has long considered foreigners to be a risk factor in relation to crime. In 2023, a survey by the Public Opinion Research Centre found that 52% of respondents agreed with the statement that foreigners were responsible for rising crime rates. This perception is, of course, closely linked to illegal migration and the potential influx of illegal immigrants. The article examines illegal migration from the perspective of the five-year period from 2019 to 2022. During this period, the number of illegal migrants detected increased sharply in 2022, reaching 29,235, before declining significantly the following year to 13,898. The text analyses the national composition of migrants and presents information on predominant migration modes, routes and trends.
